Does either gender have a better deal?
What is meant by 'better deal' is hard to define, but most people have intuitions about this. I will broadly define it as: more access to the resources which satisfy more of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. One could also think of it like this: is one better off to be a man vs. a woman.
My position: Neither gender has a better deal overall.
Historically, men have been accused of oppressing women (and I agree, men have oppressed women). This opens the door to popular claims that women are worse off than men; that women have less access to the resources (or opportunities) to lead a satisfying life.
But, the reason I acknowledge that men do oppress women yet men do not have a better deal than women, is that men also oppress other men. You may think about whether you have examples of this.
Instead of one gender being better off than the other gender, different advantages and disadvantages are associated with each gender. These vary across cultures. But there is a pattern that I claim is apparent in every culture and is thus part of the human condition:
High-status men are the best off (in terms of resources and opportunities to lead a satisfying life)
High-status women are next best off
Low-status women are next best off
Low-status men are the worst off.
I have in mind diverse types of rationale (evidence, motivation) for this position, but I’m interested first if anyone is surprised by this claim. Do you think it is obvious? What type of evidence speaks to you regarding the question of which gender is better off?
If you accept this claim (or are willing to provisionally entertain it), what are the implications?

I wrote an update to this post where I ran this idea by my Boston University undergraduates. See: https://caldwellharris.substack.com/publish/posts/detail/156767734
